Authorities in Aruba say they have detained a former Venezuelan intelligence official on a request from the U.S. government.

Prosecutors' office spokeswoman Ann Angela confirmed Thursday that the detained man is Hugo Carvajal Barrios, an aide who was close to late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.

Angela says Carvajal was "detained based on a request of the State Department." He is expected to appear before an Aruban judge on Friday.

She says U.S. officials have 60 days to formalize their extradition request.

The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a Thursday call seeking comment.

Angela says Carvajal was apparently seeking to become Venezuela's consul to the Dutch Caribbean island off the coast of Venezuela.
