El-ARISH, Egypt – Officials in Egypt say militants fired mortar rounds at a military post in the northern Sinai capital of el-Arish, killing three civilians in a nearby residential complex.
A senior security official said the attack late Sunday missed the military post, located near a compound of residential building. A medical official in the city said at least three civilians were killed and 20 injured. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.
The attack comes as Israel's offensive against the neighboring Gaza Strip enters its sixth day. More than 160 Palestinians have been killed. Palestinian militant groups fired rockets at Israel but caused no deaths.
Militants in Sinai have also fired rockets at Israel in support of Palestinian groups. Officials here said they foiled some attempts.
