A Syrian cabinet minister has warned that the dramatic events in neighboring Iraq threaten to implode the entire Middle East and undermine security in Europe and beyond.

Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi also confirms reports that Sunni insurgents have started to transfer weapons and equipment from Iraq to Syria and said it was the duty of the Syrian government to confront them.

He spoke to The Associated Press in an interview conducted in the Syrian capital Damascus Monday in which he spoke about Sunni insurgents taking over the border area between Syria and Iraq.

Al-Zoubi says the international community including the U.S. has adopted policies that "encouraged" the spread of "terrorism" in the Middle East. He added the world must unite its efforts to eradicate this unfolding threat.
