War crimes proceedings will soon get underway in a newly filed case at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

A prisoner from Iraq who has already been held for seven years at Guantanamo is to be arraigned Wednesday on war crimes charges.

Abd al-Hadi al-Iraqi is accused of being an al-Qaida commander who worked with Taliban forces in Afghanistan to attack U.S. and allied forces. The U.S. says he was not a legitimate soldier and organized suicide and roadside bombings that violated international rules of war. The 53-year-old faces life in prison.

Since the detention center opened in 2002, eight prisoners have been convicted of war crimes. One of those cases was overturned by a civilian court and six came through plea bargains. Six others are facing trial.
