Pakistan says dozens killed in strikes on militants responsible for airport siege

The Pakistani military says it has struck militants in the country's northwest responsible for a five-hour siege of the Karachi airport a week ago.

There were conflicting accounts of how many people were killed in the Sunday morning airstrikes.

The military said in a statement that over 50 militants were killed, although intelligence officials earlier put the toll as high as 100 militants killed.

The North Waziristan tribal area where the strikes occurred is remote and dangerous for journalists to access, making it impossible to independently verify the accounts.

The Pakistani government has been under pressure to combat the resilient insurgency, which has plagued the country for years, after the shocking attack on the country's busiest airport left 36 people dead, including 10 assailants.
