Rescuers search for dozens of Indian students swept away in sudden dam release; 4 bodies found

Police say rescuers have recovered the bodies of four Indian students while searching for dozens swept away when a dam released a rush of water without warning in the Himalayan foothills.

The students from the southern IT-city of Hyderabad had been taking photographs Sunday evening at the banks of the Beas River when they were hit by the rush of water from the Larji hyropower station near the mountain resort town of Manali in Himachal Pradesh.

A Manali police officer, speaking on customary condition of anonymity, said four bodies had been recovered Monday morning.

The state of Telangana, where Hyderabad is located, has sent police officials and parents of the missing to the search site.

Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh demanded the dam's engineer be suspended while the incident is investigated.
