A 92-year-old World War II British Army veteran wants his military medals back after they were stolen by an apparent conman on the anniversary of D-Day.
British police say the unidentified veteran was at home in north London when a man knocked on his door, claiming to be from a water company, and saying he needed to check the water pressure in the home, the BBC reported.
The intruder reportedly looked at the taps in the kitchen and left shortly afterwards. The incident happened Friday, during live commemorations in France of the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
It wasn’t until later in the day, the victim discovered his 11 military service medals had been stolen. Nothing else was taken in the apparently targeted robbery.
Police have made no arrests in the case yet but are looking for the suspect based on the victim’s description.
The veteran served in the Grenadier Guards regiment, fighting German forces in North Africa in 1942 and Italy in 1943.
