Floods, mudslides kill 22 in Sri Lanka

At least 22 people have died in Sri Lanka from two days of floods and mudslides that have left homes destroyed and transport disrupted, officials say.

The Disaster Management Center said Tuesday that one person was reported missing and eight others were injured. About 2,500 people were forced to flee their homes to temporary camps.

It said at least 14 people were killed in the western Kalutara district, where rocks smashed homes, destroying 44.

Two children and an elderly couple are also among the dead, according to The Hindu.

An officer at the disaster management center told the newspaper that the country’s navy and air force have been asked to rescue people marooned in floodwaters, while the army is sifting through landslide debris.

Roads and railroads were flooded in several areas, disrupting transport.

The monsoon rains came after a drought that lasted around five months, The Hindu reports.
