MOSCOW – A helicopter has crashed into a lake in northern Russia, and officials say 16 of the 18 people on board are missing, while two passengers managed to swim to safety and were hospitalized.
The federal Investigative Committee said Sunday in a statement that it was trying to determine what caused the Mi-8 helicopter to crash into a lake in the northern Murmansk region on Saturday evening.
The regional administration said on its website that the helicopter, which had a crew of five, belonged to the fertilizer company Apatit.
The state news agency RIA Novosti, citing unidentified sources, said that among the 13 passengers were Apatit executives and regional government officials. The report said they were believed to have been on a fishing trip.
