154 people detained in Istanbul protests

Police in Istanbul say they detained 154 people in Saturday night's protests marking the one-year anniversary of last year's nationwide anti-government demonstrations.

According to police, 11 officers and 12 civilians were injured and treated in hospitals after police used tear gas and water cannons to push back protesters. Of those detained, 62 remained in custody Saturday afternoon.

Protesters had defied a warning by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to keep away from Istanbul's central Taksim Square. The square was the center of last year's protests against what demonstrators view as Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian rule. Despite the ban, hundreds of people tried to reach Taksim and were met by large numbers of police, who fired tear gas.
