An Afghan official says a roadside bombing in the country's east has hit two cars, killing 12 civilians.

The attack took place on Saturday morning in the eastern Ghazni province, in Giro district.

Shafiqullah Nang, the spokesman for the provincial governor, says the casualties were all civilians — seven women, three children and two men. He says the victims were traveling to a wedding.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

Roadside bombings are a major threat to both Afghan security forces and civilians across the country. Such attacks have escalated as the Taliban intensify their campaign ahead of the U.S.-led foreign forces' withdrawal by the end of 2014.
