TUNIS, Tunisia – Tunisian authorities say they have arrested three suspected Islamist terrorists near the Libyan border and uncovered a terror plot targeting industrial and tourist sites and politicians.
Interior Ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui said the three arrested, all Tunisians from neighboring Libya, are backed by fighting groups in Libya that include Tunisians training in camps there.
The arrests were made early Sunday near the town of Ben Guerdane, near the Libyan border, following an assault by security forces on a house there, Defense Ministry spokesman Taoufik Rahmouni said. Anti-tank mines, TNT, explosive belts and a variety of weapons were found.
The announcement followed a meeting of top ministers called by Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa at a military post outside Tunis.
