Nigerian Islamists kill 26 in two attacks, police say

Suspected Nigerian Islamist militants reportedly killed 26 people in remote villages overnight.

According to Reuters, the attack came hours after an explosion killed 118 people in the city of Jos.

Militants reportedly opened fire in Alagarno, killing 17, and killed nine people in the village of Shawa.

The attack took place about 19 miles from Chibok, where Boko Haram Islamists abducted more than 200 schoolgirls on April 14, Reuters reported.

Emergency services officials told Reuters the Jos attack appeared to bear the hallmarks of Boko Haram.

There has been no claim of responsibility.

Nigeria's President Goodluck Jonathan condemned the blasts, calling the perpetrators "cruel and evil," Reuters reported.

"The government remains fully committed to winning the war against terror, and this administration will not be cowed by the atrocities of enemies of human progress and civilization," he said in a statement.
