Chinese plane maker Comac finishes 1st regional airliner, plans to deliver narrow-body in 2018

A Chinese aircraft maker says it is ready to deliver the country's first homegrown regional airliner and is on track to complete a larger aircraft in 2018.

Officials of Comac said Wednesday the first two ARJ21 jets are ready for delivery. The plane can seat 78 to 90 passengers depending on its configuration and has a range of 3,700 kilometers (2,300 miles).

China launched the ARJ21 project in 2002 in an attempt to break into the Western-dominated market for civilian aircraft. The plane was promised for 2007 but delivery was pushed back due to technical problems.

The larger aircraft, dubbed the C919, is a single-aisle jet meant to compete with Boeing and Airbus. A Comac official said Wednesday the company has orders from customers including low-cost carrier Ryanair.
