Police say an explosion ripped through a bar in the Christian neighborhood in Kano, Nigeria's second most populous city.

Assistant police superintendent Musa Magaji Majiya says emergency workers rushed to the scene Sunday night but he has no immediate word on casualties.

Multiple blasts in the same Sabon Gari quarter killed at least 24 people in July of last year, and a suicide car bomber killed 25 people at a bus station in Sabon Gari in March 2013.

Those explosions have been blamed on the Islamic extremist group that recently abducted 276 schoolgirls whose captors ares threatening to sell into slavery if the government does not release detained militants.

Alcohol is forbidden under Shariah law that holds in Kano in northern Nigeria, but authorities turn a blind eye to the Sabon Gari Christian quarter.
