Two Colombian rebel groups say they are declaring an eight-day cease-fire that will be in effect during the country's presidential election.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia and the National Liberation Army issued a joint statement declaring the May 20-28 halt in fighting.

Colombia's presidential election is on May 25.

The rebels statement was issued in the Cuban capital of Havana, where the Revolutionary Armed Forces have been in peace talks with the Colombian government since 2012.

The rebels have declared temporary cease-fires in the past, though the government has refused similar measures.
