Sudanese woman physician sentenced to death over marrying non-Muslim

Judicial officials say a Sudanese court has convicted a woman doctor who married a Christian man on charges of 'apostasy' and sentenced her to death.

The officials say the sentencing took place earlier this week and that Meriam Ibrahim was given four days to repent and escape death, a deadline that expired Thursday.

They say the court in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, also ordered Ibrahim be given 100 lashes for committing "zena" — Arabic for illegitimate sex — for having sex with a non-Muslim.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Ibrahim in 2011 married a Christian and the couple has a child.

In Sudan, Muslim women are prohibited from marrying non-Muslims, though Muslim men can marry outside their faith. Children must follow their father's religion.
