In restive western China, police fatally shoot alleged knife-wielding assailant, nab another

Official media say Chinese police in a restive western region have killed a person who allegedly attacked them with knives and explosives. Another suspect was caught.

The Tianshan news portal says police in Aksu city stopped a car for inspection at a roadblock Thursday when the suspects attacked the officers with knives and threw an explosive at a patrol car.

It says one auxiliary police officer was seriously injured.

The news portal is run by the regional branch of the Communist Party. Its report was brief with few details. Aksu police refused to answer questions when reached by phone.

Aksu is in the region of Xinjiang, where some members of the ethnic minority Uighur population have been waging a simmering insurgency against Beijing.
