SAN JOSE, Costa Rica – Costa Rica's top security official says coast guard officers have seized a fishing boat that was carrying 1.9 metric tons of cocaine from South America.
Public Safety Minister Mario Zamora said Wednesday the ship was seized 37 miles (61 kilometers) off the coast of Costa Rica with the help of the U.S. Coast Guard officers on a plane who detected suspicious activity on the vessel.
Zamora says three Costa Rican fishermen were detained.
He says the cocaine is valued at $35 million.
Separately, Zamora says authorities also aided in the seizure of 2.5 metric tons of cocaine that left in a container from Costa Rica and was seized in a port in Spain over the weekend. He gave no other details about the second seizure.
