AP interview: Mujica praises Uruguay's legal pot system, calls Colorado law hypocritical

Uruguayan President Jose Mujica says the marijuana law in Colorado is based on "fiction" and "hypocrisy," because the state doesn't track pot after it is sold and many people fake illness to get prescription weed.

Speaking hours before releasing his country's long-awaited marijuana rules, Mujica says Uruguay's licensed and regulated market will be much less permissive with drug users.

The former leftist guerrilla told The Associated Press on Friday during an exclusive interview that many will call him an "old reactionary" once they see the rules.

But he says he doesn't "believe that marijuana is benign, poetic and surrounded by virtues." He calls it an addictive substance and a public health threat.
