Activist say 14 opposition fighters have been killed in the latest clashes with Syrian government forces near Damascus.
The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says fighting between rebels and President Bashar Assad's forces has been raging on Thursday in the suburb of Zabadani, the last opposition stronghold near the capital.
Another activist group, The Local Coordination Committees, says government aircraft dropped four crude bombs on Zabadani overnight.
Activists also say that the death toll from a government airstrike on Wednesday on a school in the northern city of Aleppo rose to 20, including 17 children, on Thursday.
Initially, 10 children were reported killed but the Observatory, which relies on reports by activists on the ground, says seven more bodies have been pulled from the rubble.
