Libya's official news agency says that the son of dictator Moammar Gadhafi and others have appeared by video conferencing for a trial in the capital, Tripoli.

Seif al-Islam Gadhafi appeared at the second session of his trial Sunday via a video screen from the coastal city of Zintan, where he has been held by a militia since November 2011. Eight other defendants also appeared by video link from the city of Misrata. It is unclear why the government has been unable to transfer them to the capital to attend the trial.

The 37 defendants, including Gadhafi's former spy chief, face a variety of charges including the killing of protesters during the 2011 civil war that led to Gadhafi's ouster.

The session was adjourned to May 11.
