Argentina's president has agreed to be godmother to a lesbian couple's baby, who will be baptized Saturday in a Roman Catholic cathedral. Umma Azul is the first such baby known to receive this blessing in Argentina.

Argentine presidents by law can be named the godmother or godfather of any couple's seventh child. Nancy Esteche, who runs the presidential office that arranges these baptisms, says President Cristina Fernandez has agreed to make an exception for this first daughter of Carina Villarroel and Soledad Ortiz.

Fernandez won a political battle against Pope Francis when he was Argentina's top church leader and the country became the first in Latin America to legalize gay marriage.

After he became pope, he famously asked "who am I to judge?" if a gay person seeks the Lord.
