Authorities in Greece say some 400 immigrants are being transferred from a stranded fishing boat to a crude oil tanker after making a distress call overnight.

The Merchant Marine Ministry said the transfer was being supervised by the Coast Guard and began in the early afternoon Monday between the islands of Crete and Kythira, in moderate-to-rough seas. It did not give details on the nationalities of the immigrants or the status of the boat they were traveling on.

Officials said it was not yet clear with the migrants would be taken.

Greece is a major transit point of illegal entry for immigrants hoping to get into the European Union.
