GENEVA – Sri Lanka is fighting a push in the United Nations' top human rights body for an international criminal investigation of abuses from the country's civil war that ended in 2009.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay recommended that the 47-nation Human Rights Council authorize an investigation, saying Sri Lanka has made "little progress" toward ensuring accountability for alleged atrocities and war crimes committed during the civil war against minority Tamil rebels.

In a report Wednesday, Pillay called for an "independent international inquiry mechanism."

Sri Lanka's U.N. envoy Ravinatha Pandukabhaya Aryasinha said the report is biased, inaccurate and amounts to needless interference with his country.

The United States is sponsoring a third human rights resolution on Sri Lanka to demand accountability for the abuse allegations.
