ISLAMABAD – Representatives of the Committee to Protect Journalists say the conviction of six defendants accused of killing a Pakistani journalist is significant but they would like to see more convictions in cases involving journalists being killed.
Joel Simon, the executive director of the New York-based organization, spoke Wednesday after a delegation from the organization met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.
The journalist watchdog is in Pakistan to draw attention to the challenges and dangers journalists in the country face.
On March 3, a court convicted six men of killing a television reporter, a rare case of someone being held accountable.
Kati Marton, a member of CPJ's board, said the meeting with Sharif was "very productive" and that he seemed committed to improving the climate for journalists.
