Authorities in Greece say seven immigrants drowned when a boat sank in the eastern Aegean Sea after traveling illegally from nearby Turkey.
The Merchant Marine Ministry said Tuesday that the bodies were found after eight migrants were rescued near the island of Lesvos. An overnight search was launched for others reported on board. Other details of the incident and the nationalities of the immigrants were not immediately known.
Greece is a major transit point for illegal immigration into the European Union. In January, 12 immigrants drowned when a boat overturned near the eastern Greek island of Farmakonisi.
