Venice votes in referendum on splitting from Italy

Residents of Venice and the surrounding region are voting on whether to break away from Italy.

According to, polls suggest two-thirds of the 4 million people in the electorate favor splitting from Rome. The vote will not be legally binding, the report said. 

Voting began Sunday and will last online until Friday. 

The vote got little coverage in Italian national media, the BBC reported.
