Activists who protested in Cairo airport over not being allowed to travel to Gaza leave Egypt

Airport officials in Egypt say women activists who held a sit-in at Cairo's international airport over not being allowed to travel to the Gaza Strip have left the country.

The officials said Friday that the activists were placed on entry ban lists for "challenging and provoking security despite the good treatment."

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Nearly 40 women planned to cross into the Gaza Strip through Egypt for World Women's Day. Egyptian authorities said they refused the activists' entry into the country due to security concerns.

Egypt's border with Gaza has been closed since last month as authorities combat smuggling and Islamic militants in the Sinai Peninsula. Egypt also accuse Gaza Strip's Hamas of backing the militants.
