JUBA, South Sudan – A spokesman for the U.N. mission in South Sudan says that government soldiers and rebels continue to battle in the capital of a northern oil-producing state.
Joe Contreras said Wednesday that U.N. personnel have been unable to leave the base in Malakal because of the fighting. Ten people died at the hospital at the U.N. base on Tuesday. The base shelters more than 21,000 people seeking refuge.
South Sudan's military spokesman, Col. Philip Aguer, said rebels control some parts of the town and government forces other parts.
Oxfam spokeswoman Grace Cahill said her group's staff at the U.N. compound are reporting a shortage of water.
Imagery from the U.S. based Satellite Sentinel Project released Wednesday shows that more than 535 huts have been destroyed in recent fighting in Malakal.
