Governor says Nigeria losing war on Islamic militants; military claim extremists on the run

The governor of the northeastern state where Nigeria's terrorist movement was born has warned the country's president that the military is losing the war to halt an Islamic uprising, while the Defense Ministry counters it has the extremists on the run.

Spokesman Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade says security forces have captured some suspects responsible for attacks that have killed scores of civilians this month. He said the perpetrators are "terrorists escaping from the onslaught" of ramped up air bombardments and patrols.

But Borno state Gov. Kashim Shettima told President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday that the extremists are "better armed and better motivated." He did not blame the military but a failure of leadership.

Shettima said the toll from a weekend village attack has risen to at least 106 killed.
