BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombia's military has been shaken by scandal for a second time in less than a month. The country's leading newsmagazine says various officers and units received kickbacks of as much as 50 percent on procurement contracts.
The weekend report in Semana magazine prompted one general to resign Monday. But the government said it was taking no immediate action against armed forces chief Gen. Leonardo Barrero.
Semana did not directly accuse Barrero of corruption, but did publish online a recording of him expressing solidarity with a colonel jailed for alleged extrajudicial killings. Barrero appears to call such investigations "a bunch of crap."
Earlier this month, Semana reported that a military spy ring eavesdropped for 15 months on emails and text messages of government negotiators involved in peace talks with leftist rebels.
