Tensions over disarmament of armed militia in Central African Republic

BANGUI, Central African Republic – An official says a disarmament program in Central African Republic has been met with resistance.

Thierry Lebere of the anti-Balaka armed Christian militia said Saturday they didn't want disarmament by force, and wanted armed Muslims also disarmed.

Jean-Pierre Sadou with the African peacekeeping mission said 300 military personnel were deployed to disarm the armed militia, which staged an attempted coup in early December against Seleka Muslim rebels. He said arms have been collected amid tensions.

Tens of thousands of Muslims have fled the country amid a wave of crowd killings, where mobs of angry people have stomped, stabbed and beaten to death anyone they suspected of backing Seleka.

Also Saturday, French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said on France-Inter radio that French troops were poised to remain longer.
