BANGUI, Central African Republic – Witnesses say eight people have been killed in weekend violence in Central African Republic's lawless capital as peacekeepers struggled to contain mob attacks.
Olga Mouth, a resident of Bangui's Fifth District, said Rwandan peacekeepers intervened Sunday morning after a young Muslim man allegedly killed a young woman, prompting a mob to lynch him in retaliation.
Mouth said peacekeepers opened fire on the mob, killing one.
Rwandan Lt. Rosana Nsengimana said he could confirm only that one Rwandan peacekeeper was injured.
He said five additional bodies were retrieved from the same neighborhood but it was unclear how they were killed.
Bangui is engulfed in an orgy of bloodshed and looting despite the presence of thousands of French and African peacekeepers and the appointment of a new transitional leader last month.
