North Korea is threatening to cancel a reunion of Korean War-divided families later this month only one day after agreeing on dates for the emotional meetings.
Pyongyang's powerful National Defense Commission on Thursday told South Korea to drop what it calls hostile policies and to cancel annual military drills with the United States also set for later this month.
The North's statement says it would be "nonsense" to hold family reunions while "extremely dangerous nuclear war drills" take place.
Pyongyang infuriated Seoul in September by canceling reunion plans at the last minute, citing South Korean war drills. That cancellation hurt relations that had been slightly improving following Pyongyang's earlier threats of nuclear war.
Pyongyang calls the upcoming South Korea-U.S. military drills an invasion rehearsal. Washington and Seoul say they're routine.
