Syrian negotiators have resumed their peace talks involving U.N.-Arab League mediator Lakhdar Brahimi, a day after President Bashar Assad's adviser rejected the opposition's call for a transitional governing body.
U.N. officials said the talks resumed Thursday in the closed room in Geneva where the rival delegations are seeking a way to end the three-year conflict in which more than 130,000 people have died.
Assad's adviser Bouthaina Shaaban said in an interview with The Associated Press on Wednesday that the presidential election scheduled for later this year may not take place amid the raging violence.
Brahimi has announced that the first phase of the talks will end on Friday, as scheduled, and he is satisfied that the two sides are at the least "still talking."
