TRIPOLI, Libya – A Libyan security official says masked gunmen have kidnapped the son of a top commander of the special forces in the eastern city of Benghazi.
The official says that the son of Col. Wanis Abu Khamada, head of the military's commandos, was abducted near Benghazi University on Thursday as he was entering a restaurant with his colleagues.
He did not provide additional details and spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press.
Libya has been going through a rocky transition since the 2011 overthrow and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi. Rebel groups have turned into militias, and abductions, assassinations and bombings have been frequent occurrences in the midst of the lawlessness.
