Mexican officials say they have detained the son of the alleged leader of a drug cartel during a raid near the western city of Guadalajara.

An official of the federal Attorney General's Office who was not authorized to be quoted by name says the man detained in the city of Zapopan is Ruben Oseguera.

His father Nemesio Oseguera allegedly leads the Jalisco New Generation cartel, which is believed to be allied with the Sinaloa cartel, Mexico's most powerful drug gang.

Soldiers and marines also detained four other suspects in possession of weapons prohibited for civilian use.

The Jalisco cartel is believed to be locked in a turf battle with the Knights Templar cartel, and has been accused of supporting civilian vigilantes battling the Knights Templar in neighboring Michoacan state.
