German customs authorities say they have confiscated 3 kilograms (more than 6 pounds) of whale meat from a popular Berlin agricultural fair after receiving a tip from a newspaper that it was being sold at a Norwegian stand there.

Customs spokesman Norbert Scheithauer told the dpa news agency Thursday that authorities were trying to determine whether to bring charges. Selling or importing whale meat is illegal in Germany, and can be punished with a fine to prison time.

Berlin's BZ newspaper discovered the stand was selling the 2 euro ($2.75) marinated whale appetizers at the Green Week fair and alerted authorities.

Whale meat is legal in Norway, and BZ quoted the stand operators as saying they hadn't known it was illegal in Germany.
