Turkey's judicial watchdog has reassigned 20 prosecutors to new posts in a major shake-up of the judiciary that removes some of them from a corruption probe targeting people close to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
The transfers, announced Thursday by the Judges and Prosecutors' High Council, include the chief prosecutor for Istanbul, who was overseeing the corruption investigation.
The government has alleged that the probe — the worst crisis it has faced during its more than 10 years in power — is a conspiracy orchestrated by followers of an Islamic movement that has infiltrated the police and judiciary.
The government already has moved hundreds of police officers from key posts.
The council, which appoints judges and prosecutors, acted one day after the government had reassigned most of its members, too.
