MANADO, Indonesia – Disaster officials say flash floods and a landslide in northern Indonesia have killed at least 13 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safe ground.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency's spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said Thursday that rivers bloated by days of torrential downpours in six districts triggered a landslide in North Sumatra province.
At least 13 bodies were pulled from the floodwater and the mud late Wednesday and rescuers are searching for at least two other villagers presumed to have drowned.
About 40,000 people have fled to temporary shelters as more than 1,000 houses have been flooded by overflowing rivers, including in the provincial capital of Manado.
