Chinese police take away outspoken Uighur activist, seize computers, cellphones, documents

The wife of an outspoken scholar of China's Turkic Uighur ethnic minority says police took her husband away and raided their home, seizing computers, cellphones and even his students' theses.

Economics professor Ilham Tohti's wife Guzaili Nu'er said Thursday that around 30 police officers raided their apartment in Beijing in a six-hour operation on Wednesday afternoon after taking away the academic.

It was the latest and most serious of recent actions by Chinese authorities in apparent retaliation for his criticism of ruling Communist Party policies.

Guzaili Nu'er says Ilham Tohti and his two sons were at home while she was at work. She rushed home but her husband had already been taken away.

Beijing police did not immediately respond to a faxed request for comment.
