Turkey: police chiefs dismissed hours after police detain 25 in new graft probe

Turkey's state-run agency says at least two police officers were removed from key posts in the city of Izmir hours after police there detained some 25 people in a new bribery and fraud investigation.

The Anadolu Agency said Izmir's police chief was among 16 senior police officials reassigned to new posts on Wednesday. A deputy police chief in Izmir was also dismissed late on Tuesday.

The officers' dismissal was a sign that the government was continuing to hit back at police who are leading investigations apparently targeting the government, which is also scrambling to contain another scandal that has implicated former Cabinet ministers.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has fired those ministers but he has also denounced the investigation as a conspiracy to harm his government and vowed to fight back.
