Gunmen attack village of Kano governor who defected from Nigeria's ruling party; 3 killed

Witnesses and police say gunmen shouting "God is great" attacked a mosque in the village of the governor of Kano, a leading politician who recently defected from Nigeria's governing party.

Police say three people were killed and 12 wounded in Tuesday night's attack in Kwankwaso, outside Nigeria's second city of Kano and the home village of Gov. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

It was unclear if the attack was staged by suspected Islamic extremists or signals growing violence in political infighting ahead of contentious presidential elections next year in Africa's biggest oil producer.

Survivors said gunmen stormed Kwankwaso mosque and fired indiscriminately into worshippers that included the governor's elderly father. He escaped unhurt.

Kano has suffered attacks claimed by Islamic militants staging an uprising mainly confined to three states east of Kano.
