DHAKA, Bangladesh – Police in Bangladesh have charged the owners of a garment factory and 11 of their employees with culpable homicide for alleged negligence in a fire at the facility last year that killed 112 people.
Public Prosecutor Anwarul Kabir Babul says the police's Criminal Investigation Department filed the charges with a magistrate's court Sunday in Dhaka, the capital. According to the charges, the casualties in the Nov. 24, 2012, fire were a result of negligence in ensuring safety in the sprawling factory outside Dhaka. The factory produced clothes for global brands, including Wal-Mart.
Babul says the owners — Delwar Hossain and his wife, Mahmuda Akter — are among the accused, along with 11 managers, security guards and engineers. He says all 13 could face life in prison if convicted.
