African migrants in Israel protest detentions with march to Jerusalem

Police say about 150 African migrants have left an "open" detention facility to protest Israel's policy of detaining those illegally in the country.

Under an amended law, Israel can detain African migrants without trial for a year, after which they are moved to a new detention facility.

Activists say the detentions are meant to pressure migrants to voluntarily leave Israel.

Police spokeswoman Luba Samri says the protesters are expected to reach Jerusalem on Tuesday after a journey on foot and by bus that started on Sunday.

The migrants are allowed to leave their detention facility but are required to report back three times a day.

Some in Israel view the migrants as an economic and social burden.

About 53,000 Africans, mostly Sudanese and Eritreans, are in the country.
