BOGOTA, Colombia – Colombia's president says his government is sending a protest note to Russia over the violation of his country's air space by two long-range bombers on a flight from Venezuela to Nicaragua.
The overflight on Friday was first disclosed by Colombian media Tuesday.
President Juan Manuel Santos says the Russian planes should have asked for permission to enter Colombian airspace but didn't. He says the bombers also returned to Venezuela through Colombian airspace and were intercepted by two Colombian Kfir jet fighters. He hasn't released any further details.
Russia's Defense Ministry said on Oct. 28 that two Tu-160 supersonic bombers had flown to Venezuela as part of a military exercise. The planes are capable of carrying nuclear missiles.
