Prosecutors at the International Criminal Court say they do not oppose delaying the trial of Kenya's president until next year.
Judges at the Hague-based court will now have to rule on whether to stick to the Nov. 12 start date for Uhuru Kenyatta's trial on charges of orchestrating postelection violence in Kenya that left more than 1,000 people dead in late 2007 and early 2008.
Kenyatta, who was elected earlier this year even though he had been indicted by the ICC, insists he is innocent.
His lawyers have called for the case against him to be delayed or dropped, saying evidence is tainted by false testimony from prosecution witnesses.
Chief Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda says in a statement released Thursday the trial could now start on Feb. 3.
