Ex-BBC driver accused of sex charges is found dead after failing to appear in a London court

A former BBC driver facing trial for sex offenses has been found dead at his home after failing to turn up in a London court.

David Smith, 66, was the first person charged under Operation Yewtree — an investigation triggered by sex crime allegations against late BBC entertainer Jimmy Savile.

Smith stood accused of five offenses, including indecent assault and sex with a boy under 16 years old. The alleged offenses took place in the 1980s.

Scotland Yard said Tuesday police went to a private address Monday after a man had failed to turn up in court and found a body. The cause of death is not known.

Police did not name the man, but British media — including the BBC and Press Association — identified him as Smith.
