Israel army says at least 1 rocket fired from Gaza Strip, missile defense system intercepts it

The Israeli military says at least one rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel but that its missile defense system intercepted the projectile.

The army says the defense battery — known as the "Iron Dome" — intercepted one rocket above the city of Ashkelon early on Monday. The army says an additional rocket was likely launched as well. No injuries were reported.

The "Iron Dome" has shot down hundreds of rockets launched by Gaza militants.

The rocket fire comes as Israel released the names of 26 Palestinian prisoners to be freed as part of a U.S.-brokered deal that led to the resumption of Mideast peace talks.

The prisoners to be released were jailed for the killings of Israelis before the beginning of Israeli-Palestinian peace talks in 1993.
